A 35 year old female was intubated and placed on a ventilator for acute respiratory failure. The patient had chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and was a known episodic heroin abuser. There was acute exacerbation of her COPD due to injection of her nephew’s prescribed Ritalin. Final diagnoses: (1) Acute respiratory failure, (2) acute exacerbation of COPD due to injections of non-prescribed Ritalin, (3) endotracheal intubation, (4) mechanical ventilation.
